VEAZIE – Helen G. Smith, 92, passed away March 31, 2008, of Alzheimer’s disease, at a Bangor nursing home. She was born Nov. 17, 1915, in Dexter, the daughter of William and Letha (Oliver) Gould. Helen married Robert P. Smith of Bangor, in 1942 and they moved to Veazie in 1949. She graduated from Bangor High School, and worked for many years for a Bangor law firm, bank and other professional businesses. In later years she began a new career as a teacher’s aide at Veazie Elementary School, where the students benefited from her skills and creativity. Helen had many interests and talents. She was an avid reader, especially of history, was an enthusiastic gardener and a great cook, known for her bread mak-ing. She was also interested in the arts, passionate about the opera, and talented in drawing and watercolor. Helen was a devoted friend, a good neighbor and was known for her wit, humor and generosity. She is survived by a daughter, Susan S. Howland and husband, Edvill, of Turner; a son, Robin G. Smith and wife, Christine, of Bangor; three grandchildren, Emily Bowles, Matthew Smith and William Smith; four great-grand-children, Elias Bowles, Alyssa, Ashley and Sadie Smith. She was predeceased by her brother, William O. Gould of Auburn; and by her husband, Robert, to whom she was married for 55 years. A private graveside memorial service will be held at a later date at Fairview Cemetery, Veazie. Gifts in her memory may be sent to Bangor Public Library, 145 Harlow St., Bangor, ME 04401.
