BREWER – Helen Margaret Ayer, 95, died peacefully Friday, April 8, 2005, at a local nursing home. She was born March 17, 1910, in Brewer, the daughter of P. Eugene and Alice (Hall) Ayer. She attended Brewer schools, graduated from Brewer High School, Farmington State Teachers College and the University of Maine, Orono. Helen was a teacher for 42 years, retiring in 1971. She taught at the North Orrington Grammar School and Mary Snow School, Bangor. Many children had the privilege of her teaching ability. One of her pupils was the former Maine Governor John McKernon. Helen was a member of the Maine Education Association and the Penobscot Retired Teachers Association. She was a lifetime member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Brewer, where she sang in the choir, served on many committees and taught Sunday school. Helen was predeceased by two brothers, Robert H. Ayer of Brewer and Paul E. Ayer of Ashland. She was a “Nana” to Stephen Ayer, as his grandmother, Thelma Ayer passed away the year prior to his birth in 1965. This was a special relationship. Surviving are, one niece, Barbara Clayton of Englewood, Fla.; four nephews, Robert H. Ayer Jr., and his wife, Joan, of Portland, Forest Ayer and his wife, Shirley, of Arizona; Paul Ayer Jr.and his wife, Anita, of Augusta, and Arthur Ayer of Caribou. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2005, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Calvary Baptist Church, State Street, Brewer with the Rev. Roger Davis, pastor officiating. Interment will be later in the spring at Oak Hill Cemetery, Orrington. Memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church, 61 State St., Brewer 04412.
