HIRAM – Helen Marr Shields Goodall, formerly of Dyer Brook and Patten, 95, died in a Gorham healthcare facility on Nov. 25, 2003. She was born Nov. 29, 1907, in Houlton, the daughter of John J. and Harriett Symmes Marr. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Island Falls, where she served as treasurer for many years. Helen also was the treasurer of the town of Dyer Brook for a number of years and was active in town affairs. She was a graduate of normal school in Presque Isle. Prior to her retirement, she worked as an LPN in the former Resthaven Nursing Home in Patten. She spent many years helping her first husband, James Shields (deceased), on their farm in Dyer Brook. She liked nothing better than being out-of-doors helping in the fields. She also is predeceased by her second husband, Robert Goodall. She is survived by a daughter, Jean Moody and her husband, Harvey, of Nobleboro; and two sons, James Shields Jr. and his wife, Sandra, of Haverhill, Mass., and David Shields and his wife, Janet, of Hiram; grandchildren, Andrew Moody, Lynne Weister, Susan Varichak, Kenneth Shields, Wayne Shields, Karen Fosnock, Mark Shields, John Shields, Michael Shields, Timothy Shields, Chester Charette and Joy Pepin; 22 great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Mary Lucas. She is also predeceased by two sisters, Bertha Hodgkins and Harriet McNamara; and a brother, Frank Marr. A Visiting hour will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, followed by a funeral service in celebration of her life at 2 p.m., both at Neal & York Funeral Home, 12 High St., Porter. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, at Dyer Brook Cemetery, Dyer Brook.
