HOULTON – Helen (McCain) Welch, 97, died Aug. 20, 2006, at a local health care facility. She was born April 23, 1909, in Ludlow, the daughter of Stanley James and Elizabeth J. (Hannigan) McCain. Helen attended local schools and was a graduate of Aroostook Normal School. She was a member of the Saint Mary of the Visitation Church, the Maine Educator’s Association and the National Teacher Association. She taught grade school in Ludlow and Pleasant Street schools. In 1935, she moved to Wellesley, Mass., where she taught grade school until her retirement in 1968. Helen returned to the Houlton area in 1993. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Kathryn M. Dyer and her husband, Roger, of Houlton, Patricia A. McCain and her husband, David Austin, of Sumatra, Indonesia, Barbara M. Robertson and her husband, Thyrele, of New Limerick, Stanley J. McCain and his wife, Nga, of Orlando, Fla., and Virginia E. McCain of Ludlow; several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles H. Welch; two brothers, James and Harold; a sister, Dorothy. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Saint Mary of the Visitation Church. A reception will be held at St. Anthony’s Hall after the funeral. Interment will be at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellesley, Mass.
