BREWER and BANGOR Helen (Beck) Morrill, wife of Henry Morrill, died April 3, 2008, in Bangor, after a long illness. She was born May 20, 1920, to Nicholas and Pelagia Beck in Shutesbury, Mass. Helen grew up in the nearby city of Springfield, Mass., attended Classical High and was an active member with her parents in Saints Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church. After training at Springfield Hospital and Columbia University, she served her local community as a registered nurse and her country as an officer in the U.S. Army Nursing Corps in the Philippines during World War II. She married her husband, Henry, in 1947. They lived, raised a family and worked together in Brewer for some 55 years. For her outstanding service to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Bangor, she received the Diocesan Award from the Metropolitan Bishop of Boston in 2002. During the years her children attended St. Teresa’s School in Brewer, she volunteered as nurse, librarian and PTA member. Later volunteer work included several years delivering with Meals for ME and support of the YWCA, where she swam regularly for more than 20 years, forming many close friendships. Her elderly parents, numerous friends in their last years, and many others were touched by her constant care, compassion, friendly warmth and strength. Helen was a talented homemaker who loved to cook, bake, garden, sew, walk, bird watch and listen to and join in music. With her husband and their friends she enjoyed camping, travel and cribbage. She was predeceased by her parents; and brother, Harry Beck. She is survived by her husband, Henry Morrill of Orono; her son, Dale Morrill and his wife, Gail, of Abingdon, Va.; son, David Morrill and his wife, Deborah, of Orrington; daughter, Jane Thomas and her husband, Scott, of Orono; son, the Rev. Bruce Morrill, S.J. of Cambridge, Mass.; three grandchildren, Matthew Morrill of Orono, Bethany Morrill of Washington, D.C., and Janice Morrill of Orrington; great-grandson, Nicholas Morrill of Orono; sister, Martha Parker of Westford, Mass.; a nephew and several nieces. The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. Friends may visit 4-8 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 69 State St., Brewer, where a Trisagion service will be held 7 p.m. A funeral service will be celebrated 10 a.m. Monday, April 7, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 90 Sanford St., Bangor, with the Rev. Adam Metropoulos, presbyter, presiding. Burial will be at a later date at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor.
