BANGOR – Jane Goodness, 81, died Oct. 17, 2007, at a local health care facility. She was born Feb. 1, 1926, in Bangor, the daughter of Daniel and Agnes (Trainor) Sargent. She attended Bangor schools and graduated in 1945 from John Bapst High School. She married Hugh G. Goodness, Sept. 6, 1948 and they remained married until his death in 1991. She volunteered for more than a decade with Meals-for-Me program, delivering meals to shut-ins in the Bangor area. At an age when most people plan to retire, Jane eagerly chose to devote her weekdays to caring for three infant and toddler grandchildren, so that two sets of parents could work full-time and know that their children were safe in the arms of a loving grandmother. Jane took care of two of her grandchildren from infancy until they attended school. She is survived by one daughter, Jeanne Goodness of Bangor; three sons, Jeff and his wife, Dawn, of Clifton, Greg and his wife, Judy, of Saco, and Gary and his wife, Robin, of Bangor. She leaves seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She is survived by one sister, Mary Giles; and one brother, Bob Sargent, both of Bangor. The family thanks the dedicated staff of Engel Place Daycare, ICF Long Term Car and the Waterman units of Ross Manor, for the excellent quality care provided to Jane throughout the years. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 768 Ohio St., Bangor, with the Rev. Thomas Lequin, pastor, presider. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the interment in the church parish hall. Gifts in Jane’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, One Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.
