ETNA – Herbert Graves Sr., 93, died peacefully Nov. 23, 2005, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Aug. 7, 1912, at Carmel, a son of Charles and Gladys (Sylvester) Graves. He graduated from Carmel High School, Class of 1931, and married the former Delana Jenne Feb. 22, 1939. A holder of the Boston Post Cane, Herbert was Etna’s oldest citizen. He served as a selectman and school board member for Etna for many years. Herbert was a self-employed woodsman and farmer. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening and camping. Herbert was a kind and gentle man. He loved his family, family gatherings, and was an inspiration to all who knew him. In addition to his wife of 67 years, he is survived by 10 children, Ruth and husband, Jerry Appleby, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Ronald of Detroit, Allen Sr. and wife, Respah, of Etna, Sandra and husband, Bruce Harris, of Dixmont, Marilyn and husband, Jay Smith, of Dixmont, Elizabeth and husband, Marvin Lane, of Etna, Wanda Smith and her companion, Floyd “Sandy” Sanborn, of Carmel, Wilma and husband, Gary Wolford, of Etna, Michael of Newport, Marsha and husband, Scott McConnell of Etna; 25 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sons, Herbert Harrison Graves Jr. and Calvin Sr. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, with the Rev.
