PALMYRA – Herbert W. Davis, 84, died Sept. 14, 2007, at Maine Med-ical Center, Port-land. He was born Aug. 15, 1923, in Hartland, son of Erwin and Winnie (Aiken) Davis. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion. He worked for many years as a carpenter locally and then retired from Dexter Shoe in 1995, where he worked as a night watchman. He loved the outdoors, and enjoyed gardening and working with his tractor. Herbert was a great storyteller and loved telling tales of the escapades of his younger years. He also enjoyed fishing. For the past few months he had been making his home at the Baron Center, Portland, where he had been receiving outstanding care. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn (McKenzie) Davis of Davis Corner, Palmyra; two daughters, Debbie and her husband, John Murray, of Newport and Linda Whitman of Carthage, N.C.; five grandchildren, Steve and Jenni Morrell, Angie Frederick, Amy Chambers and Mandy Whitman; and two nieces. He was predeceased by two sisters, Grace Woodman and Jean Crawford. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport.
