BERNARD and PORTLAND – Hilda E. Sylvia, 93, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, at a local nursing home. She was born Sept. 19, 1912, in Tremont, to Capt. Collins M. and Elizabeth (Hall) Gott. She was educated in Bernard and later married Aubrey Young. They had two sons, William and Dartelle. She later married Glenn Sylvia and they enjoyed many years at their vacation home on Grand Lake Stream fishing, boating and hunting. They also loved their home in Bernard on Mount Desert Island spending peaceful hours viewing Cadillac Mountain, the waterfront and nature. Hilda was a former member of Eastern Star of Tremont and a devoted member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Southwest Harbor, where she sang in the choir. She was the postmaster in Bernard for 19 years where she made many friends. Her trademark hats always made her a standout. After retiring she collected and sold driftwood at her Little On Shore Shop. She also loved to pick blueberries and make pies in her spare time. Hilda was predeceased by her husband, Glenn in 1997; and her son, Dartelle in 2003. She is survived by her son, William Young of South Portland; daughter-in-law, Gloria Young of Scarborough; grandchildren, Julie Willette, Joseph Young, Janice Laviolet, Debra Durgin, Donna Cleaves, Teresa Gray and Sandra Young; their spouses and many great-grandchildren. The family would like to give special thanks to the staffs of Scarborough Terrace and Pine Point Manor for her exceptional care. Friends are invited to call 10-11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, followed by an 11 a.m. funeral service at the Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Phil Shearman. Interment will be at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Augusta, beside her husband at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Hilda’s memory may be made to Robert Rich Boat Building Scholarship Fund, care of Bar Harbor Banking & Trust Co., Southwest Harbor, ME 04679.
