ORRINGTON – Hilda E. Van Wart, 85, went home to be with her Lord, Nov. 4, 2007. She was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Bradford, the daughter of the late Franz and Lizzie Ross Hurd. Hilda grew up in Bradford, later moving to Bangor and graduating from Bangor High School. She was married 40 years to her beloved husband, Harry Van Wart. She was a longtime member of the Second Congregational Church, Brewer, where she enjoyed doing the Scripture reading. Hilda was dearly loved by her family and friends who will cherish wonderful memories of her. She was an excellent Scrabble and card player. Hilda enjoyed traveling with her family to Cape Cod, York Beach and the Maine coast. She was an avid cross-country skier. She will be remembered as a wonderful cook, making biscuits and cookies for her neighbors and special cakes for family occasions. Her whoopie pies, bunsteads, trifle and graham cracker pie, were all famous family favorites. Hilda was living with her daughter, Mona Van Wart, in Meddybemps at the time of her passing. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Van Wart; and brother, Elwin Hurd. Other family members are Kenneth and Valerie Hurd of Charleston, Helen Bradford of Kenduskeag, Kathleen Smith of Kenduskeag, Evelyn Hewes of Bangor; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Second Congregational Church, Brewer. There will be a time of fellowship immediately after the service.
