MONSON – Hollis F. Nelson, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away unexpectedly Nov. 4, 2004, at his home. He was born Dec. 30, 1929, in Monson, the son of the late August and Beryl (Pennington) Nelson. Hollis graduated with honors from Monson Academy in 1947. After being discharged from the U.S. Air Force in 1952, Hollis married Rose LeCouter of Greenville on June 6, 1953. They lived in Monson for 51 years. Hollis worked briefly for the railroad, followed by a long career as a logger and U.S. Postal Carrier, retiring in 1995. Hollis was an active member of the American Legion and the Monson Historical Society. He was also a communicant at Holy Family Catholic Church in Greenville and formerly served as an usher at Holy Family Catholic Church in Sangerville. He was a member of S.W.O.A.M. and served as a volunteer at C.A. Dean Memorial Hospital in Greenville. Formerly a selectman for the Town of Monson, Hollis served many years as the town’s surveyor of Logs, Lumber, Wood and Bark. Hollis had a deep and boundless love for his wife and family. His happiest moments were the special times he spent with them and his many friends. He was particularly proud of the family farm where he and his son Shawn devoted endless hours working the property and improving the quality of the woodland. Hollis is survived by his wife of more than 51 years, Rose of Monson; two sons, Shawn and his wife, Lynne, of Monson, Kevin and Marcia of Freeport; grandson, Toby and his wife, Miranda, of Dover-Foxcroft; granddaughter, Jodie of Farmington; eight week old great-grandson, Joseph Alan Nelson; a sister, Rachel Johnson of Verona; brothers-in-law, Paul LeCouter and his wife, Elaine, of New Jersey, Herman LeCouter and his wife, Joyce, of South Carolina, Albert LeCouter and his wife, Bernice, of Massachusetts; a special cousin, Thurley Knowles; many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loving mother and father; brother, Dana; brother-in-law, Rupert Johnson; sister-in-law, Claudia LeCouter; special cousins, Millicent and Stanley Robinson, and Eloise and Forrest Stevens; and many other cousins. He will be sadly missed by his family and many close friends. Friends are invited to call 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Dover-Foxcroft, with Fr. James Robichaud, celebrant.
