FRIENDSHIP – Horace M. Kelley, 85, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Augusta. He was born Nov. 22, 1918, in Jonesport, the son of Nelson and Lizzie Murch Kelley. He grew up in Jonesport, and attended local schools. He lobstered for a brief time. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the French Croix de Guerre for gallantry in the battle of Cassino. He spent 26 months in frontline active duty in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and France. After World War II, he was a manager at the Waldoboro Garage for more 15 years. He later worked for Bath Iron Works as a ship fitter and worked there until he retired in 1983. After he retired, he went back to his hobby of lobstering and being on the water. He was a member of the Friendship Advent Christian Church and a member of the VFW in Friendship. He was predeceased by a brother, Warren Kelley; and a sister, Beulah Stokes. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Elaine Gould Kelley of Friendship; son, Vernon Kelley and his wife, Dorothy, of Vernon, Conn.; two daughters, Jeannine Taber and her husband, Rev. Jim Taber, of Morganton, N.C., Rosemary Kelley of Friendship; two sisters, Mildred Redimarker of South Berwick, Esther Seavey of Jonesport; five grandchildren, Bethany Murdock and her husband, Brewster, of Ohio, Brian Kelley and his wife, Melissa, of Ohio, Melanie, Jennifer and Stephanie Taber of Tennessee; five great-grandchildren, Kaley and Arie Alvardo of Ohio, Brewie Murdock of Ohio, David and Nicholas Kelley of Ohio. Visiting hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, at the Friendship Advent Christian Church in Friendship, with the Rev. Dwight Dean officiating. Burial will follow in the Village Cemetery in Friendship. Contributions in his Horace’s memory may be made to the Friendship Advent Christian Church, 19 Cushing Road, Friendship, ME 04547. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Hall Funeral Home, Waldoboro.
