PATTEN – Madelyn P. Howes, 90, died May 14, 2004, at home. She was born July 14, 1913, in Durham, the daughter of Frank A. and Eva M. (Howe) Engelman. Madelyn attended music school in Boston summers during high school, graduated from Lewiston High School and Farmington Normal School in 1933, and enjoyed teaching music and 5th grade. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education at UMO in 1967. She taught school in Auburn and Patten, retiring in 1972. Madelyn was a member of the Patten Woman’s Club, serving as president for many years, Maine State Teachers Association, Stetson Memorial Methodist Church, as organist and choir director for more than 50 years. She enjoyed her friends at the coffee group, ceramics, quilting and sewing, her flower garden and her community. Madelyn dearly loved her students and her fellow teachers, and took great pleasure in her family. Madelyn was predeceased by her husbands, Thurston B. Howes, in 1942, and Sherwood S. Howes, in 2003. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon H. McPhee; and granddaughters, Sheryl M. Harriman and her husband, Richard, of Prospect, and CJ Willson and her husband, Ross, of Portland Ore.; grandchildren, JW Harriman, Chloe Willson and Joshua Willson; cousin, Marion Drapeau of Lewiston; and nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the home health caregivers, Dianne Lane, Gloria Slauenwhite, Tammy Shaw, and many more friends and neighbors. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Sunday, May 30, at Stetson Memorial Methodist Church, Patten, with services being held at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Chandler officiating.
