INDIAN ISLAND – It is with deep sadness and heavy heart that we inform you of the passing of Howard David Mitchell, who was born Oct. 15, 1953, the son of Dr. Theodore N. Mitchell of Indian Island, Kevin Mitchell of West Palm Beach, Fla., Natalie Michelle of Indian Island and Carl G. Mitchell of Bangor. He also leaves behind two very special nephews, Scott Sockabasin and Mitchell King, along with 30 other nephews and nieces, 26 great-nephews and great-nieces and three great-great-nephews and great-great-nieces, many aunts, uncles, cousins and his many dear, dear friends, too vast in number to list. Howard graduated from John Bapst High School, Class of 1971 and the Culinary Institute of America, CIA, Hyde Park, N.Y., with a Bachelor of Food Science degree, Class of 1974. He earned the highest distinction ever given to a graduating student at CIA and was awarded every major recognition of honor and excellence given in a graduating class. He was also inducted into the Escoffier Society there. Howard was a five-star chef, having worked in the finest restaurants from Maine to California. He was also on the faculty at the Johnson and Wales Culinary Institute, Providence, R.I., and Penobscot Job Corps Center, Bangor. Howard was also involved in the testing and development of recipes for many major commercial confectionery and prepared food manufacturers. He also served as vice president of the Maine Culinary Association. He especially enjoyed being a judge of the many culinary competitions around Maine and New England, and stayed active in the culinary arts up until his illness. He was simply a lover of fine food and the presentation thereof. We extend our appreciation and gratitude to Marge Neptune, Suzanne Nicola, Reese Hildreth, Natasha Charley and Tufts New England Medical Center Transplant Unit, Boston, and to the many others who helped Howard these past many months. Without these true caregivers and friends, his last few years would not have been as full as they were. We, as Howard was, are truly grateful. As per Howard’s request, there will be no viewing. Those who wish to pay their respects may do so 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at St. Ann’s Church, Indian Island.
