BRADENTON, Fla. – Howard J. Callahan, 85, died May 27, 2006. He was born in Eagle Lake and moved to Bradenton in 1987, from Stratford, Conn. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired as a machinist for Sikorsky Helicopters in Bridgeport, Conn., where he worked on the first Black Hawk helicopter. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bradenton. He was predeceased by his wife, Selma; parents, Fred and Mary Callahan; sister, Ethel Smith; and brother, Fred Jr. He is survived by his brother, Linwood of Eagle Lake; and three nieces, Patricia Downing of Portland, Barbara Sprague of Skowhegan and Mary Andrews of Roanoke, Va. Interment will be at Bay Pines National Cemetery in Bay Pines, Fla. Memorial contributions may be made to TideWell Hospice and Palliative Care, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238.
