SEATTLE, Wash. – Hubert Willis Townsend died Nov. 16, 2005, at the age of 83, after a battle with cancer. Hubert was born Jan. 7, 1922, in New York City, N.Y., to Claude Willis and Evelyn Fisher Townsend and was raised in Scarsdale and Auburn, N.Y. He was a graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick and Boston University Law School and practiced law in Belfast and in Seattle, Wash., before entering the real estate brokerage business as the owner of the John J. Elliott Company, which became Laurelhurst Homes, in Seattle. Hubert had many diverse interests and activities. He was an Eagle Scout and a lifelong tennis player, skier and sailor who enjoyed racing sailboats locally and internationally with his sons. He was a student of history, language and different cultures and appreciated travel, dancing, occasional acting and always a good debate. Hubert is survived by his companion, Jacqueline Simonds of Seattle, Wash.; children, Hubert C. (Tyrone), Marion, Lewis (Judy) and James of Seattle, Martha Grosenick (Carl Paul III) of Kirkland, Wash. and Jocelyn Mullins (Kevin) of Plain City, Ohio; grandchildren, Rachel Townsend, Emily, Gunnar and Heather Grosenick and Heather Mullins and extended family and friends. A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Remembrance donations may be made in his name to the Belfast Free Library, 106 High St., Belfast, ME 04915.
