SPRUCE HEAD – Imogene Brown Williams, 79, passed away, Dec. 7, 2003 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport, following a short illness. Born in Bangor, July 21, 1924, she was the daughter of Leo W. and Dorothy Burnham Brown. Educated in Bangor schools, she was a 1942 graduate of Bangor High School. In earlier years, she worked as a telephone operator at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor. On Sept. 27, 1947, she married Capt. Stephen Coleman Williams Jr. Imogene was married 52 years to her first and only love, Stephen. He died in 1999. After their marriage, the Williams moved to Schenectady, N.Y. and then to Rochester, N.Y. While living in Rochester, she worked as secretary to the vice principal of Greece Arcadia High School. Imogene was a founding member of the Aldersgate Methodist Church in Greece, N.Y. She also volunteered many years with the Girl Scouts of America. With her husband, Imogene returned to Maine in 1983 to enjoy their retirement. She is survived by two daughters, Cindy Williams Fifield and her husband, John, of Salem, Mass., Karen Monahan of Spruce Head; one granddaughter, Houston Stapp and her husband, Michael, of Deland, Fla.; one great-grandchild, Isaac Coleman Stapp; her sister, Elaine Downs and her husband, Raymond, of Plymouth, N.H., as well as many nieces and nephews. A memorial celebration honoring Mrs. Williams life will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, at the Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland.
