NEW LIMERICK – Dr. Ira K. Tarbell DDS died Feb. 28, 2005 at a local healthcare facility. He was born June 5, 1919, at Merrill, the son of Leon and Alma (Leader) Tarbell. Ira was a graduate of Merrill High School, Ricker Jr. College and State University of Iowa, Dental College Class of 1943, where he became a Doctor of Dental Surgery and a member of Delta Sigma Delta. Dr. Tarbell began his Houlton dental practice in 1946, after serving as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific aboard the USS Whitney. He was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Episcopal, the Houlton Lodge of Elk No. 835, Houlton Lions Club and the Fish & Game Club. He was past president of the County Dental Assoc., the Maine State Dental Association and the Houlton Community Golf Club. He loved all sports- golfing, fishing and hunting and at one time was a registered Maine Guide. He loved flying and had a pilot’s license for several years. He was a charter member of the Northern Maine District board of Basketball Officials and active in numerous other organizations. He is survived by his wife, Gladys (Noteboom) Tarbell of New Limerick; his cousin, Lester Tarbell of East Walpole, Mass.; special friends, Mary Louise and Donald Vander Well, Kay and Robert Myers, Robert Korver, Hope and Gary Dwyer, Maxine and Wilford Virgie. Friends may call at the Dunn Funeral Home 10 a.m. Monday until time of services at 11. Interment will take place at the Tarbell Cemetery in Merrill.
