PITTSFIELD – Irene Elizabeth (Ames) Whitman, 84, of 244 Spring Road, went home to her Lord Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2007, after a brief illness. Irene was born April 20, 1923, daughter of Errol and Hester (Matthews) Ames of Pittsfield. She attended Pittsfield schools and graduated from Maine Central Institute in 1941. Irene married Robert C. Whitman in 1941. A wonderful homemaker, she and her husband raised their son and daughter, worked on the family farm, and later enjoyed several years of service to the State of Maine at Pittston Farms, in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway and on Swan Island, Richmond. Irene took pleasure in knitting, fishing, hunting, hiking and made an awesome custard pie! She had a miniature schnauzer, Heidi, who she loved dearly, and she enjoyed attending Faith Evangelical Free Church, Waterville. Irene was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Robert, in 1996; her brother, Kenton Ames of Connecticut, in 1965; and her brother, Maynard Ames, in August 2007. She is survived by her loving son, William R. Whitman and his wife, Ann, of Milford, Del.; and her loving and devoted daughter, Linda J. Higgs and her husband, James J. Higgs IV, of Pittsfield. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Maj. Scott D. Whitman of Rock Island, Ill., Andrew W. Whitman of Felton, Del., Bruce E. Higgs of Pittsfield, Wendy L. Higgs of Pittsfield and James J. Higgs V of Corinna; seven great-grandchildren; her brother, Stanley Ames and his wife, Dorothy, of Williamsburg, Va.; her brother, Robert Ames and his wife, Norma, of York; her sister-in-law, Charlotte Ames of Pittsfield; many special nieces and nephews including, Dwayne Ames, who always had a special place in her heart; and many dear friends. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at Shorey-Nichols Funeral Home, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield. A funeral service in celebration of her life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the funeral home with the Rev. Brent Small officiating. Interment will be held after at Village Cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, Pittsfield.
