SKOWHEGAN – Irene V. Wentworth, 84, of Skowhegan, died Sunday, June 5, 2004, at Westgate Manor, Bangor. She was born March 30, 1920, in Pittsfield, daughter of Melvin A. and Idella (Hunter) Taylor. She was educated at M.C.I. in Pittsfield. She was married to Royal Henry Wentworth, who died in 1979. She was a homemaker for many years and was also a cook at the Skowhegan Motel & Restaurant for a few years. Irene and Royal owned and operated Wentworth Orchards in Skowhegan. After leaving the orchard she moved uptown by the back gate of the Skowhegan fair grounds. She enjoyed parking cars for the fair grounds, spending time with the people who camped there and develop friendships with them. She loved her family, her dog Tina, her car and going for rides. She enjoyed making apple pies, crocheting, embroidering and making Christmas wreaths. Irene is survived by a son, Richard Nightingale and wife, Mary, of Rockport; a special niece, Corris Ann Dunton Richards of Lincoln; special nephew, Merlon Dunton and wife, Kay, of Ripley; stepson, Royal Wentworth Jr. of Connecticut; stepdaughter, Harriet Gould of Dixmont; two granddaughters, Stacey and Beth; several great-grandchildren; a niece, Violet Higgins; a nephew, Keith Higgins, both of Pittsfield; and many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Iona Higgins and Edna Dunton; a brother, Maurice Taylor. At Irene’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Donations may be made in her memory to Westgate Manor, care of Activity Fund, 750 Union St., Bangor, ME 04401. Arrangements are under the direction of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan.
