BANGOR – J. Henry “Hank” Cameron, a long time resident of 207 Juniper St., died peacefully Monday, July 2, 2007, with relatives and friends at his bedside at St. Joseph Manor, Portland. He was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Debec, New Brunswick, the son of Houlton residents, Henry B. and Mary (Kirlin) Cameron. He attended school in Houlton and graduated from Houlton High School in 1938. He graduated from Farmington Normal School in 1942, and spent the next three years in the U.S. Army. He served with the 1st U.S. Army in Europe from Normandy to Germany. After World War II he returned to Maine and began his teaching career in Bangor. He received his Bachelor of Science and Master of education from the University of Maine in Orono. Hank served 37 years in the Bangor school system as a teacher and principal, most of those years as principal of what was then known as Garland Street Junior High, from which he retired. Cameron Stadium behind the school was named in his honor when he retired in 1982. He was a member of the Maine State Principals Association, Maine Teacher’s Association, Rotary Club and many educational and civic committees. He was a charter member of Bansco Credit Union and served as its first president. After retiring as principal of Garland Street Junior High School, he enjoyed working with student teachers from the University of Maine system and served several years as a mediator for the State of Maine Court System. Hank was predeceased by his parents; and his wife of more than 50 years, Nadine McQuarrie Cameron; his bro-thers, Bernard, Benedict, Thomas and Francis. Surviving are his sister, Therese Wood and her husband, Wendell, of Houlton; his brothers, the Rev. Hilary J. Cameron of Portland and John G. Cameron and his wife, Sandra, of Auburn; and dear friend and companion, Jeanne Whitten, of Topsham; several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Visiting hours will be held 4-8 p.m. Thursday, July 5, at Foley Funeral Service. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Friday, July 6, at St. John’s Catholic Church, York Street, Bangor. Burial will be held after at St. Benedict’s Cemetery, Benedicta. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. John’s Catholic Church or your favorite charity.
