AUGUSTA – Jack R. Doane, 69, died Feb. 15, 2005, at the Togus VA Medical Center following a long illness. He had been continually hospitalized at Togus since August 1987. Jack was born March 17, 1936, in Kingman, the eldest son of Earl Clifford and Janette Ruth (Brittain) Doane. His father died a tragic, unexpected death Nov. 29, 1961. His mother died at the age of 75, following a long illness. Jack attended Lee Academy. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Aug. 20, 1954, serving until Aug. 8, 1957, and again from Aug. 31, 1961 to April 12, 1962. He was stationed in Alaska, Fort Bliss, Texas, Fort Deven, Mass., Vietnam and Hawaii. He completed high school in the Army and was in officer training school in Hawaii when his father died at age 55. Jack left the Army to help his mother with three younger siblings. He married Joyce Toby of Prentiss Dec. 24, 1963. They resided in Lincoln and had two daughters, Lisa May, born Oct. 28, 1964 and Lorraine Ann, born May 26, 1966. Jack was employed as a machinist at Lincoln Pulp and Paper Company. In October of 1968, he sustained a job related head injury leaving him with severe physical disabilities. After months of rehab he returned home to his wife and children and attempted to live a full and useful life. However, his health gradually deteriorated and in the mid 1970’s he had multiple admissions to nursing homes and to the Togus VA Medical Center. Jack had four brothers, two sisters and five grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Ronald Allen Doane, who died unexpectedly from a tragic accident at the age of 23 and James Lee Doane, who died unexpectedly from a fall at the age of 62; a nephew, Michael Steven Doane-Bouchard, who died in a car accident at the age of 19. In addition to his two daughters, he is survived by five grandchildren, Alicia Marie Doane, age nine, who resides with her father, Robert Ludec in Winn, Natasha Joan Doane, age 10, Hannah Joyce Doane, age 8, Zachary Jack Doane, age 4 and Madison Nicole Jones, age 8 months, all of whom reside with their mother, Lorraine and father Wendell Jones, of Walnut Ridge, Ark.; two brothers, Ralph Earl Doane, age 66, of Kingman and Calvin Leslie Doane, age 54 of Weston; two sisters, Norma Emily Doane-Bouchard, age 64 of Lehigh Acres, Fla. and Bernetta Faye Doane-Jones, age 47 of Blaine, Minn.; three elderly maternal aunts, Ina Morris of Connecticut, Agnes Roy of Brewer and Minnie Rollins of Wytopitlock; seven nephews, four nieces and many great-nephews and great-nieces. Jack was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was very special, touching hearts and loved by all that knew him. He leaves many friends, relatives and caregivers at the Togus VA Medical Center, including special caregiver, Winnie Bechard of Randolph. Jack loved fishing, hunting, camping and the Maine woods. He was an avid reader of American history, country and western ballads and the Bible. He loved gospel and country music. He was an active member of the VA Medical Center Chapel and when well enough served as a deacon. Jack will be sadly missed by all who knew him and especially by his family, friends and staff at the Togus VA Medical Center. There will be a funeral in the spring.
