WINTHROP – Jacob Joshua Bailey, 77, died Friday, June 23, 2006, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born June 1, 1929, at the old Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, Vt., the son of Leslie and Bessie (Clark) Bailey. Jake attended Adams Elementary School, Junior and Senior High School and graduated from the University of Vermont, all located in Burlington, Vt. He entered the Army and taught the troops skiing, mountain and winter warfare in the mountains of Japan near the end of the Korean War. While there, he contracted miliary tuberculosis and was hospitalized one and one half years at Valley Forge Army Hospital. He worked for Westinghouse Electric Supply Co. for the next 38 years as a salesman in Vermont and branch manager in Bangor and Augusta. Jake was an avid skier and in his youth was one of the 60 top racers in the United States. He also enjoyed mountain climbing and helped build shelters on the Long Trail in Vermont. He also enjoyed golfing. He had a wonderful sense of humor and an ability to have fun. Jake was a deacon in most churches he belonged to, including South Parish Congregational United Church of Christ in Augusta. He also worked with youth, trustees, church councils and building committees and was a delegate to many state and national church meetings over the years. He was also a former Rotarian and active in business-related groups. He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth and his parents. Jake and the former Laura Noble, of Jeffersonville, Vt., were married in 1959. He leaves his beloved wife, Laura; his special daughters, Winona Hunt of Dover, N.H. and Elizabeth Bailey Roberts and her husband, Paul, of Winthrop; grandchildren, Joshua, Heather and Ian Hunt and Bailey and Spencer Roberts, all of whom he was so proud of and loved dearly; his brother, Everett and his wife, Doris; and several nieces and nephews and their families. Relatives and friends are invited to visit 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, June 30, at Jake’s home, 7 Hillside Ave., Winthrop. A memorial celebration of his life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 1, at the Winthrop United Methodist Church. Memorials may be given for youth camper scholarships to either the Pilgrim Lodge, care of United Church of Christ or Mechuwana, care of United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 277, Winthrop, ME 04364.
