ALTON – James E. Galayda, 80, died peacefully Oct. 6, 2006, at his residence. He was born Jan. 23, 1926, in Edison, N.J., a son of James and Margaret (Kover) Galayda. Jim was a World War II veteran, having served aboard a Navy destroyer escort ship and crossed the Atlantic many times during the war. He was employed as a sheet metal fabricator in New Jersey for many years, retiring in the early 1960s because of health reasons. Jim enjoyed traveling to Maine for hunting and fishing trips. After his retirement, he moved to Alton in the late 1960s. He was a member of many local organizations including the Old Town VFW Post No. 3381, the American Legion, Elks, Masons and Shriners. Jim and his wife, Dorothy, enjoyed spending winters in Florida. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Davies) Galayda of Alton; a brother, Stephen Galayda and his wife, Irene, of New Jersey; a sister, Elizabeth Harned and her husband, Kenneth, of New Jersey; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Golding of Florida; nieces and nephews, Gary Galayda, Karen Galayda, Steven Galayda, James Galayda, Margaret Klemensits, Dorothy Haggerty, James Golding and his wife, Susan, all of New Jersey, Eileen Hanson and her husband, Howard and Adrienne Martin and her husband, Stan, all of Brandon, Fla.; many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by a nephew, Kenneth E. Harned Jr. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, with the Rev.
