CAPE NEDDICK – James Houghton Webster, 72, died Aug. 5, 2004, at York Hospital. He was born June 14, 1932, in Hallowell, a son of Clifton B. and Marie O. (Lerette) Webster. He attended Hallowell schools and graduated in 1950. James joined the U.S. Army and served two years in Germany during the Korean War. He was in the Military Police Corps, attaining the rank of Corporal. After his military service, he attended the University of Maine and graduated with a B.A. degree in 1959. He received his master’s in economics from Clark University in 1960, and completed graduate studies in finance at Northwestern University in 1967. From 1960 to 1965, he was an assistant treasurer at Guaranty Bank and Trust Company in Worcester, Mass. From 1969 to 1973, he was Assistant Professor of Finance at the University of Maine, Orono, where he received the Nicholas Salgo award for teaching excellence in 1970-71. In 1973, he joined Merchants’ National Bank in Bangor, as a vice president and remained in banking until 1992. James was active in a wide range of civic, professional and cultural organizations, including the United Way of Bangor, and was treasurer of the University of Maine Alumni Association for 10 years. Most recently he was a civic member of the Greater Yorks Chamber of Commerce. He leaves his wife of 42 years, Faith Hutchins Webster; his daughter, Heidi Webster Cushman of Pownal; his son, Andrew Hutchins Webster of Bangor; and four grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Julia Keenan of Farmingdale, Cynthia McPherson, Nancy Coan, and a half brother, Richard Webster, all of Hallowell. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the First Parish Congregational Church, 180 York St., York.
