KISSIMMEE, Fla. – James “Jim” Whitehead, 64, passed away Thursday, Nov. 24, 2005, at his home in Kissimmee, Fla., after a courageous five year battle with cancer. Jim was born Sept. 22, 1941, in Millinocket, the son of the late James H. and Arleine (Stimpson) Whitehead. He graduated from Stearns High School in 1960 and from Husson College in Bangor in 1962. He was a radio announcer and sportscaster at Millinocket and Portland Stations throughout the 1960’s and 70’s. He served in the U.S. Army and was employed by Great Northern Paper Company before retiring and moving to Kissimmee. Jim had a lifelong love of sports and played high school and college baseball. He played on more than 40 softball teams, winning three championships. Jim was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan for more than 50 years, but he was the biggest fan of his children and grandchildren. Jim enjoyed fishing at Nesourdahunk and collecting baseball cards. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Jo Ann Chasse; son, Jamie of Kissimmee; daughter, Jennifer and son-in-law, Derek Davis, of Millinocket; grandson, Alex of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brother, Ronald; sisters, Deanna Perrow, Rhoda Bouchard, Jean Osgood; and many nieces and nephews. Jim will be greatly missed by his family, friends, fans and athletes. Nobody knew or loved baseball like he did. He will always be remembered as a kind and easy going sports fan with a great sense of humor. Per request of Jim a private memorial will be at a later date in his hometown of Millinocket. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully request that donations be made to the Hospice of the Comforter.
