HAMPDEN – James Lawrence Hicks, 82, passed away peacefully, May 1, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Shawnee, Okla. Jim graduated from high school in Oklahoma, and attended the University of Maine, majoring in art. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the 232nd Infantry Division Company A, during which he received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and numerous medals and commendations for his dedicated service to our country. During his life, he worked and traveled throughout the country building gas pipelines. He was a longtime resident of Hampden, and had owned the former Purple Cow Restaurant in Hampden for a number of years. Jim loved his family and friends, and enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was an avid Red Sox fan. He also enjoyed painting, and gave many of his paintings away to family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis (Bartlett) Hicks; and his son, James P. Hicks, both in 2001. He is survived by his grandsons, Michael L. Hicks and his wife, Michelle, Jonathan P. Hicks and his wife, Nyla; daughter, Meredith Leventhal of Baltimore, Md., daughter-in-law, Karen K. Hicks; and two special great granddaughters, Sarah and Cassandra. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2004, at the Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden, with the Rev. Elliot Kerns officiating. Visitation will be Saturday, from 12 noon until time of service at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow the service at Locust Grove Cemetery, Main Road South, Hampden.
