WINTERPORT – Janice (Davis) Rowell, 78, passed away peacefully July 17, 2006, at a local hospital. She was born June 2, 1928, in Hampden, the daughter of Vaughan L. and Emma L. (Emerson) Davis. Janice was a graduate of Hampden Academy, Class of 1946. She attended Drake University, Iowa; Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass.; and held a masters of divinity degree from Bangor Theological Seminary. Janice worked as a librarian for many years and was a library assistant at the University of Maine at Orono from October 1986 to September 1992. She was an intelligent, artistic and generous woman. Janice volunteered many hours to Meals for Me and The Good Samaritan Agency, where she made and donated many quilts. Janice was a regular blood donor to the American Red Cross and worked with the Hampden Neighborhood Food Cupboard for many years. Janice was an active and longtime member of the Hampden Congregational Church where she also gave many hours of her time in service to God. She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Janice is survived by her son, Christian E. Rowell, and his partner Jackie Dolley, of Milford; brothers and sister, Eugene E. Davis and his wife, Virginia, of South Portland, Robert S. Davis of Hampden, Frank L. Davis of Forest City, N.C. and Mary L. Burns of Hampden; two grandchildren, Christian S. Rowell and Janice L. Rowell; great-grandchildren, Joseph, R.J., Kate, Austin, Courtney and Hayden; nieces, nephews and cousins; Jeanne Everett, her sister in Christ; and countless friends. She was predeceased by her parents; and a sister, Yvonne E. Fearon. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hampden Congregational Church, U.C.C., Main Road North, Hampden, with the Rev. Dr. Debra M. Jenks, pastor officiating. Interment will be at Locust Grove Cemetery, Hampden. In keeping with Janice’s generous spirit, memorial contributions may be made to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, 100 Campus Dr., Scarborough, ME 04074.
