GARDINER – Janice Gail (Tisdale) Jenkins, 66, died Aug. 26, 2006, surrounded by her family, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta. Janice was born May 11, 1940, in Gardiner. She attended Gardiner schools and received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Maine in 1977. Janice was a devoted and loving mother who kept her family together and raised her four children independently despite many great challenges after she was severely injured in a snowmobile accident in 1970. She also opened her home and her heart to numerous foster children over the years. She loved painting, listening to music, gardening, trips to the ocean and spending time with her family and friends. She had an adventurous and giving spirit and truly enjoyed helping and giving to others. She was very active throughout her life and served on the planning board for the city of Gardiner and volunteered at the voting polls for many years. Janice is survived by her daughters, Melanie Nickless and husband, Richard, of Gardiner, Melissa Jenkins of Cranston, R.I., Julie Farr and husband, P.J., of Newburgh; her son, Paul Jenkins and wife, Kandi, of Ellsworth; her grandchildren, Joshua and Alexandra Nickless of Gardiner; her mother, Dorothy Tisdale of Augusta; her sisters, Dorothy Read-Tardiff of Washington and Harriet Rogers of Dayton, Ohio; her brother, Harry Tisdale Jr. of Chelsea; her dear friend, Carole Walsh of Gardiner; her cat, Sarah; and many other dear friends, nieces, nephews, cousins and foster children, with whom she shared her life. She was predeceased by her father, Harry Tisdale Sr.; and her sister, Arlene “A.J.” Finley-McRee. In accordance with Janice’s wishes, a celebration of her life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at her home. All friends and family are invited to attend.
