CASTINE and NORTH BERWICK – Jean Carleton Hill, 85, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 25, 2005, in North Berwick. She was born Aug. 2, 1919, in Irvington-on-the-Hudson, N.Y., the daughter of Guy and Ada (Whittemore) Carleton. She graduated from Manhasset High School, N.Y., Class of 1937 and Stonehill Junior College in Rye Beach, N.H. in 1939 with an A.A.S. degree. She married M. Chester Hill of Marion, Mass., Jan. 8, 1944, in Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, Calif. She was employed by Mass Bonding & Insurance Company in New York, N.Y., Bally Ribbon Mills in New York, N.Y., the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies in New York, N.Y., Demers Insurance in San Francisco, Calif., and the American Red Cross also in San Francisco. Prior to moving to Castine in 1967 she and her husband resided in San Francisco, New Orleans, and the Panama Canal Zone. She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Ancon, Panama, Trinity Episcopal Church in Castine, Maine Maritime Women’s Club and the Castine golf Club. She was predeceased in death by her beloved husband, Chet; parents, Guy and Ada; and brother, Ed; sister, Ada; and sister in law, Harkie. She is survived by her brother, Robert Carleton of Manson, Wash.; sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Evelyn Hill, Mark and Pat Hill; grandsons, Chris, James, and Jonathan Hill; sister-in-law, Janice Whipple; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held in Castine, at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Trinity Episcopal Church of Castine.
