WEST ROCKPORT – Joan A. Bragdon, 74, died early Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at her home after a long illness. Born Oct. 28, 1932, in Seattle, she was the daughter of Wesley S. and Ardella “Pat” Patterson Millet. Educated in Seattle schools, she was a 1951 graduate of Queen Ann High School. May 3, 1952, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy. While serving at the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Ill., she met her future husband, Richard D. Bragdon. The couple married March 6, 1954, in Chicago. After her own and her husband’s discharge from Naval duty, they made their home in Portland. They later moved to Rockland, where she worked at the Sears Roebuck store and with AT&T. In support of her husband’s career with First National Stores, she moved with him to Kittery. While living in Kittery, she attended Exeter School of Nursing, Exeter, N.H., earning a certificate as a licensed practical nurse. In the early 1960s, the Bragdons returned to Portland, where she worked at City Hospital, which is now the Baron Center and at South Portland Nursing Home. In 1962 they returned to Rockland. Mrs. Bragdon worked at the former Knox County General Hospital, in the operating room and as a lab clerk. For several years until her medical retirement in 1991, Mrs. Bragdon served as program director of the Knox – Waldo – Lincoln counties early periodic screening and diagnostic treatment program. She often said this was one of the most fulfilling and rewarding endeavors she ever accomplished. Her family said that she was an accomplished seamstress, who could sew anything. She enjoyed many crafts, collecting teddy bears and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was a longtime member, and in 1977, served as president, of the Rockland Emblem Club No. 200 and was the 1984 – 1985 president of the State Emblem Club. She enjoyed many friendships from her years of service to those organizations. She was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Corinne Martel; and two brothers-in-law, Don and Dale Bragdon. In addition to her husband of 52 years, Richard of West Rockport, she is survived by one son, David Bragdon and his wife, Pamela, of Rockland; one daughter, Susan Kelly and her companion, Richard Blair, of West Rockport; seven grandchildren, David and Kevin Bragdon, Joshua and Jessica Schatzer, Casey, Katherine and Mac-kenzie Kelly; two great-grand-children, Jackson Riley Kelly and Christian Scott Schatzer; four sisters-in-law, Marie Rickett of Florida, Joan Kormos of Michigan, Pam Adams and Terri Lynn Bragdon, both of Portland, as well as several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, by the Rockland Emblem Club at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland. Interment will be at a later date at Forest City Cemetery, South Portland.
