HOULTON and SCARBOROUGH – Joan “June” F. Tomah, 83, passed away March 6, 2004, at the Pine Point Healthcare Center in Scarborough. She was born June 21, 1920, at Kingsclear, New Brunswick, the daughter of Elizabeth “Bessie” (Tomah) Laporte. She was the granddaughter of Nellie (Paul) Tomah, Thomas Tomah; niece of Andrew and Sara (Atwin) Tomah, Grace (Atwin) Tomah, Gabe Tomah, Charles and Minnie (Clark) Tomah; great-niece of Lizzie (Elizabeth Paul) Nash, Minnie (Paul) Saulis; and sister to Nellie Tomah. Joan leaves her brother, Richard Tomah; and her daughter, Patricia Tomah. She was the eldest member of the Houlton Band of Maliseet and a member of the St. Mary’s Church during her residence in Houlton from 1921-1966, Hartford, Conn., from 1966-1996, then moving to Saco in 1996. She attended Houlton schools and assisted in basketry with uncles, aunts and cousins, Theresa (Tomah) Paul and Waneta (Tomah) Deveau. She was caregiver to her grandmother, Nellie Tomah and her mother, Bessie (Tomah) Laporte when they became ill. She was an avid Boston Bruins Hockey fan for many years and loved playing bingo throughout her life. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 10, 2004, at Saint Mary’s Church, with Father Eddy Morin celebrant. Interment will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery and will be announced in the spring. St. Mary’s Bereavement Group held a luncheon following the Mass. A service of Dunn Funeral Home.
