FORT FAIRFIELD – Joan M. Smith, 70, wife of Dale V. Smith, died Sunday, May 29, 2005 at a Presque Isle healthcare facility following a long illness. She was born June 3, 1934, at Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Joseph and Beatrice (Deschesne) Doucette. Joan was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School Class of 1952, and was employed by Houghton Farms of Fort Fairfield. She was a communicant of the St. Denis Catholic Church, Fort Fairfield, a former member of the Frontier Snowmobile Club, Fort Fairfield, and was married to Dale V. Smith on May 4, 1953. Joan will be remembered as a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was predeceased by one brother, Paul Doucette; one son-in-law, Richard Lynch. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dale V. Smith of Fort Fairfield; two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul J. and Violet Smith of Old Town, Peter D. and Laurie Smith of Deerfield, N.H.; one daughter, Lori Lynch of Fort Fairfield; one sister and brother-in-law, Loraine and Glenn Smith of Allentown, Pa.; one grandson, Nicholas Lynch of Fort Fairfield; two granddaughters, Teri Lynch of Hollis and Kelly Lynch of Fort Fairfield; one great-grandson, Seth; one nephew, Matthew Smith and his wife, Janice, and his daughter, Ashley. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at 1 p.m. at the St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main Street, Fort Fairfield, with the Rev. Jean-Paul Labrie celebrant. A time of fellowship will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 260 Main Street, Fort Fairfield, immediately following the funeral Mass.
