BREWER – John Betts, 56, passed away Dec. 27, 2005, at his home in Brewer, after a long illness. He was born July 17, 1949, in Castine, the son of George and Viola Betts. Even though John had been struggling for the last few years with his illness, he still managed to keep his handsome smile and continued to get out as much as possible. John was a member of Special Olympics for years where he developed many friendships, which he held dear to his heart. John’s family would like to extend their thanks to John’s OHI team for all they have done for him in the past few years and their attempts to make his dreams come true, with a special thanks to Melissa Darby. John’s best friend, Jessica Powers, has been there for John and his early morning or late evening conversations and John always loved going to visit or out to eat with Jessica, it always put a smile on his face. John’s OHI team will miss the late night games of his favorite card game, the way his eyes would light up when going out for ice cream was mentioned and of course the dance he would do to the “Achy Breaky Heart” song, no matter where he was! John is survived by his mother, Viola of Castine; five brothers, Ronnie Betts and his wife, Ramona, of Round Pond, Dana Sr. and his wife, Marsha Betts, of Brooksville, Arno Betts, Randy Betts, both of Deer Isle, Joey and Kathy Betts of Bangor; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at the Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Treatment Center, (formally known as BMHI), 656 State St., Bangor, with the Rev. Roland Nadeau, Catholic Chaplain of the Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Treatment Center, officiating. For those who would like to remember John in a special way, may make gifts in his memory to the Penobscot Area Special Olympics, care of Carol Ryan treasurer, P.O. Box 215, Holden, ME 04429 to benefit an OHI athlete. A service of Brookings-Smith Clark-Piper Chapel, Brewer.
