STONINGTON – John C. Ames, 69, died July 25, 2007, at the Island Nursing Home, Deer Isle, after a long illness. He was born Dec. 30, 1937, in Vinalhaven, the son of Capt. Edward and Joyce (Bennett) Ames. John was a commercial fisherman all of his life. John started lobster fishing and handlining for groundfish with his grandfather as a boy and after leaving Vinalhaven, fished for redfish on the Grand Banks and Labrador shore aboard Rockland’s offshore trawler fleet. After more than a decade, John returned to coastal Maine and became widely known for his skill in catching scallops, groundfish, lobsters and crabs aboard the F/V Elva G. John was awarded the Fisherman of the Year award in 2007 by the Island Fishermen’s Wives. He is survived by his eight children, John Ames, Jean Ames, Jackie McLaughlin, Patricia Clough, Jay Clough, Kevin Clough, Julie Ann Ames, and Kathleen Lymburner; his brother, Ted Ames; sister, Carrie Sachse; 18 grandchildren and four great-grand-children. He was predeceased by his wife of 34 years, Elva (Eaton) Ames; his first wife, Joan (Bennett) Young; and a grandson, Alfred Clough. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 27, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Stonington. Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at the funeral home with Richard Spencer officiating. Burial will be held after in the family lot at Mount Rest Cemetery, Burnt Cove, Stonington.
