BANGOR – John Carl Mairhuber passed away Wed-nesday evening, June 13, 2007. He was born Dec. 12, 1922, in Rochester, N.Y., the son of Ellis Island immigrants from Vienna. After graduating from the University of Rochester, he was entered into the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Pacific and Japan area. Upon honorable discharge, Lt.j.g. Mairhuber married his school sweetheart, Katherine Mad-dam. They adopted two children, Carl and Susan. He received his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. John taught at Richmond University, Virginia, and New Hampshire University before coming to Orono in 1968, as head of the math department at Maine. Those who knew John remember his love of camera, gardening, and music. Many will never forget his lovely voice in the Bangor Community Chorus, the Renaissance singers, the Oratorios and church choirs, including his solo of Stille Nacht at midnight, on Christmas Eves. John is survived by his children and three grandchildren, as well as his second wife, Marie Whitehill-Mair-huber and her children, Ency Whitehill, Wendy Roundy, Pamela Hatheway, and Austin Whitehill and spouses and their children. John had eight great-grandchildren in whom he delighted. The family publicly thanks the nurses and administration at the VA home in Bangor for the very special care they gave John to preserve his dignity and self esteem to the end. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Those who wish to remember John in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the University of Maine Foundation, Two Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469-5792, for a math scholarship and for students at the University of Maine.
