CHERRYFIELD – John Davis Mecklin, chair maker, artist, carpenter, lobster fisher, poet and friend to many, left this world on Feb. 15, 2004, after a long illness. John Davis was born Jan. 26, 1949, at Ottawa, Canada, to John Martin Mecklin and Shirley Elaine (Karr) Mecklin. He was predeceased by a brother, Alexander William Mecklin, in 1992. Known to many of his friends simply as “JD”, John Davis was loved for his exuberant audacity, his capacity for random acts of thoughtfulness, his value for personal freedom and his dedication to an organic lifestyle. His curmudgeon wit, obtuse wisdom and wildly foolish heart will be missed and remembered by many. JD leaves behind as legacy an unknown multitude of handcrafted chairs and tables, original paintings and poetry which he dispersed and shared with friends and family scattered across the country. John Davis is survived by his mother of Westport, Conn.; and a son, Alexander Edward Mecklin of Lewiston, Idaho. His presence will be missed by his loyal consort, Eileen Campbell; and by numerous friends near and far who have known and loved him dearly. There will be a memorial gathering will be held at 12 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004, at JD’s residence at 360 Sprague Falls Road, Cherryfield.
