ORONO – John Donald Coupe, 72, died Feb. 11, 2004, at a Bangor Hospital. He was born August 29, 1931, in Holyoke, Mass., the son of Alfred and Erna (Hohenberger) Coupe. John served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1953-1955. He graduated from South High School Class of “1949” and received his B.S degree in chemical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1953, and his M.A and Ph.D in economics from Clark University in 1957 and 1960. John was an assistant professor at Kent State University from 1961-1962, assistant professor from 1958-1961, associate professor from 1962-1966, chairman department of economics 1969-1976 and 1989-1993, professor of economics from 1966-1995, acting vice-president for finance and administration 1979-1981, vice president for finance and administration 1981-1984, and Professor Emeritus 1995, all at the University of Maine, Orono. While at the University of Maine John had several publications and served on many state committees. He was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, and served on the church finance committee and council. Surviving are his wife, Mavis Coupe; three children, Jeffrey Alan Coupe and his wife, Kate, Stephen Russell Coupe and his wife, Ann, and Cynthia Ellen and her husband, Bob Convery; stepsons, Dwight Alan Sarson and his wife, Dana, Craig Steven Sarson and his wife, Rita, Jeffrey David Sarson and his wife, Yvonne, and Matthew Brett Sarson and his wife, Denise; grandchildren, Erik, Jessica, Danielle, Michelle, Hillary, Kendall, Gabriel, Sebastian, Matthew, Jack, Hannah, Jack, Ayla, Brent, Nichole, Matthew and Jessica; two great-grandchildren, Samuel and Quenton; brother, George Coupe of Freeport, N.Y.; sister, Janice Canty of Worcester, Mass. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Sylvia V. Coupe; and a stepson, Jerome Thomas Sarson. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Brookings-Smith, LaBeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono. A service of remembrance will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Redeemer Lutheran Church 540 Essex St., Bangor, with Rev. Elaine Hewes, pastor, officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to share conversation and refreshments in the church fellowship hall following the service on Tuesday.
