BANGOR and ORONO – John E. “Pete” Hess died Feb. 13, 2006, at a local hospital after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 11, 1921, in Bethlehem, Pa., the son of Walter E. and Isabelle (Richards) Hess. After the death of his father in 1932, he and his mother returned to her home in Houlton, where he graduated from Ricker Academy in 1939. He took an additional year of study at Riverside Military Academy and then continued his studies at Bowdoin College, graduating in the Class of 1944. He immediately joined the U.S. Navy, marrying his wife Barbara just before he departed for service on the U.S.S. Chicago in the Pacific Theater, serving as an officer in the newly developing technological area of radar. When he returned from the war, he entered Harvard Law School. After graduation in 1948, he and his family moved to Bangor, where he joined the legal department of the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad, becoming general counsel and vice president-finance of the company. He joined the firm of Eaton, Peabody, Bradford & Veague in 1967, where he was a pioneer in security law in the State of Maine. He established the corporate department for the firm, serving as its head until his retirement in 1986. Pete was active in civic affairs throughout his life. He served on the Bangor City Council from 1954-56, serving as chairman during his final year. He served on the boards of Eastern Maine Medical Center, Husson College and Eastern Trust & Banking Company. In 1974, he was appointed by Gov. Horace Hildreth to the newly-created Board of Environmental Protection. After he retired, he joined the board of Stinson Seafood company and was active in the local chapter of SCORE, serving as a volunteer counselor and president for several years. A member of Penobscot Valley Country Club for more than 50 years, Pete was an avid and enthusiastic golfer. He was also a longtime member of the Tarratine Club, were he enjoyed a good hand of bridge and a cutthroat game of cribbage. He was a member of All Souls Congregational Church, serving at various times as both a deacon and its moderator. A devoted and loving family man, Pete is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara; five children, Walter R. (Janice), Brenda H. Jordan (Kenneth), Alan P. Hess, Paul E. Hess (Vickie) and John A. Hess (Louisa); 13 grandchildren, Peter E. Hess, Katherine C. Hess, Sarah J. Zahn (Edward), Laura R. Jordan, Kenneth P. Jordan, Gerald M. Hess, Julia M. Hess, Andrew P. Hess, Stephen R. Hess, Kristina L. Hess, Lee M. Hess, Aurora J. Hess, Andrea M. Hess; one great-grandchild, Aidan W. Foley. Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A service of remembrance will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor with the Rev. Dr. James L. Haddix, pastor and teacher, officiating. A reception will follow immediately in the main dining room at Dirigo Pines, 9 Alumni Dr., Orono.
