ELLSWORTH – John Edward Smith, 81, died March 16, 2004, at the Brewer Rehab & Living Center. He was born Jan. 13, 1923, in Somerville, Mass., the son of John A. and Edith (Glenn) Smith. John served in the U. S. Navy during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He retired as the general manager of the Quincy Medical Supply & Equipment Co. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His greatest enjoyment was giving to others. John was an avid golfer, skier and reader. He especially enjoyed coaching youth hockey and baseball. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, David J. Smith of Ellsworth; stepson, Eric G. Libby of Holliston, Mass.; two stepdaughters, Gail L. Duym of Trenton, Ellen B. Libby-Krepner of Waldoboro; three brothers, Edwin L. of Nashua, N.H., Bernard A. of Concord, Mass., George A. of Burlington, Mass.; five sisters, Irene Kelley of Natick Mass., Dorothy McMakin of Tewksbury, Mass., Edith Feltrup of South Boston, Marie McAllister of Marlborough, Mass., Theresa Vorce of Hudson, Mass.; and nine grandchildren. He was predeceased by a stepson, Richard Libby; and a sister, Barbara Beal. Visiting hours will be held 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be prayed at 11 a.m. Friday, March 19, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 231 Main St., Ellsworth, with Father Lou Phillips celebrant. A spring interment will be announced at a later date. Memorial contributions in John’s name can be made to the Garden Fund at Westgate Manor.
