HANCOCK – John H. Kief Sr., 92, died Oct. 8, 2003, at a Bar Harbor healthcare facility. He was born Aug. 29, 1911, in Eden, the son of Percy H. and Tullia A. (Thomas) Kief. He was a dairy farmer in Trenton for 28 years and developed a natural strain of registered Guernsey. He also ran the Colorado Riding Stable of Lamoine. Along with Lysle Smith, he organized the fire department in Town Hill; and started the volunteer fire department in Trenton, serving as chief for six years. He also served as selectman, tax assessor and overseer of the poor in Trenton and Hancock. He was a member of Bar Harbor Masonic Lodge for many years; York Rite Bodies of Ellsworth; and Anah Temple Shrine of Bangor. John was also active with 4-H and Soil Conservation. He served on the A.S.C.S. Committee, and F.H.A. Committee serving as chairman for several years. He also was Hancock County Chairman for 21 years and trustee of the 4-H Foundation for 20 years. He was a charter member of the Bar Harbor Police Reserves and R.C.D. of Hancock and Washington counties and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. John is survived by two sons, John H. Kief Jr. and his wife, Joanne, of Hancock and William Kief of Belfast; a daughter, Phyllis Leavitt of Carmel; sister, Flora Galaher of Springfield, Mass.; 24 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jeannette (Poulin) Kief; daughter, Marilyn Young; son, Kenneth Kief; two brothers, Percy and Lawrence Kief and a sister, Myra. He will be sadly missed by all his grandchildren, especially his granddaughter, Colleen, and her husband, Louis. Friends are invited to visit 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at Jordan Funeral Home, 113 Franklin St., Ellsworth. Graveside services will be private.
