JOHN J. FILOMENA WESTMANLAND – John J. Filomena, 90, loved dearly by family, and cherished by friends, died peacefully, Wed-nesday, Sept. 21, 2005, in Caribou. He was born Nov. 21, 1914, in New York City, the son of Joseph and Josephine (Pollara) Filomena. In addition to running a family business in Port Jefferson, John worked for the A&P supermarket in New York, virtually never missing a day of work. Retired for 26 years, he and his wife enjoyed traveling to Florida and also taking trips to visit family back in their native New York. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Anchor-Astoria Lodge No. 0729 in College Point, N.Y., and was also past patron of the O.E.S in New York. Living year round for over 20 years in Maine, John was a member of the Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church in New Sweden. John was well known in the surrounding communities for his engaging and often humorous storytelling, pride in his grandchildren and his wisdom. Never without a roll of Lifesavers in his pocket, his love will live on for generations. John married his sweetheart, Ruth (Whitney) Filomena, July 1, 1933. They recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary, still as in love as the day they married. In addition to his wife of Westmanland, he is survived by a son, John Filomena Jr. of Sound Beach, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by their two daughters, Janet Filomena and Barbara Margeson. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at the Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church, with the Rev. James Morgan, officiating. Memorial donations may be made to a memorial fund in John’s names, care of the Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church, Capital Hill Rd., New Sweden, ME 04762.
