DOVER-FOXCROFT and MONTVALE, Va. – John J. McCormack Sr., 83, husband of the late Frances (Vedegis) McCormack, died peacefully April 15, 2004, at a Montvale, Va., nursing home. He was born Feb. 2, 1921, in Nyack, N.Y., the son of Peter and Ida (Wooten) McCormack. As a youth he was active in the Sea Scouts on the Hudson River. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II as a radio operator aboard the convoy escort/ice breaker, USS Storis, in the North Atlantic. He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in 1980, after 31 years of government service, working assignments at Barnes Airport in Westfield, Mass., and Bradley Field in Connecticut. He was a devout Roman Catholic all his life. He was predeceased in 1992 by his wife of 48 years, Frances, who was born in Sebec and a 1940 graduate of Foxcroft Academy. He enjoyed the outdoors and took his family on many camping and sailing adventures. He was a talented guitar player and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was loved dearly and will be missed by his four children, John of Merrimack, N.H., Kathleen Daugherty of Lynchburg, Va., Elizabeth of Boston, Mass., and Michael of Derry, N.H. He leaves seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, April 23, 2004, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Dover-Foxcroft, with Father James Robichaud celebrant. Burial will be in the family lot in Dover Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of the Lary Funeral Home.
