BREWER and CALAIS – John J. Sabattus, 82, died Nov. 28, 2006, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born June 23, 1924, in Calais. John attended Calais schools and graduated from Calais Academy, Class of 1942, and went on with his education in engineering at the University of Maine – Orono. In September 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines and took part in the invasion of Okinawa. After his return to the United States, he was discharged in April 1946 and returned to the University of Maine – Orono, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta. John married Carolyn Matthews of Eastport Aug. 25, 1948, and later had two daughters. He worked for 33 years as an engineer for New England Telephone, during which he was based out of Calais for eight years and then Presque Isle for 25 years. John retired in 1985, when he and Carolyn moved to Brewer. John was a wonderful family man, his family and his home were most important to him; he loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife of Brewer, he is survived by two daughters, Sharon Sabattus of Perry and Lisa Turner of Presque Isle; five grandchildren, Craig Pelkey of Eastport, Nichole Bouchard of Perry, Jessica, Kara and Matthew Turner, all of Presque Isle; and four great-grandchildren, Alexa and Hunter Pelkey of Eastport and Brayden and Abrum Jackson of Presque Isle. A memorial Mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 531 North Main St., Brewer, with the Rev. Tom Farley, celebrant. Interment will be at Calais Cemetery.
