ELLENTON, Fla., and MANSET – John Jacob Kelley Sr., formerly of Manset, died of metastatic cancer, April 18, 2007, at his home in Ellenton, Fla. He was born April 22, 1935, in McKinley, to Joseph Walter Kelley and Rose Blanche McGovern Kelley. He graduated from Pemetic High School, Southwest Harbor, and was proud to have played on their winning basketball team. He had many fond memories of riding around Seawall, eating lobster and steamed clams at the picnic area, people watching about town and eating out at the Cozy Cove. Before retiring to Florida, he spent his working years at Hinckley Yachts, L.S. Wilbur and McEachern Hutchins. He enjoyed reading, gardening and telling stories to his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Pauline Kelley of Ellenton, Fla.; two daughters, Lynn Pettigrove of Chantilly, Va., and Teresa Blanchard of Poland; two sons, John Kelley Jr. of Hancock and Kenneth Kelley of Pompano Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren, Christy Churchward, Nikki Petigrove, Brandy Youstin, Angelique Kelley, Kenneth Kelley Jr., and Brittany Kelley; five great-grandchildren, Hunter, Cole and Isabella Churchward, Jason Youstin and Calynn Kelley; his brother, Shirley Kelley of Hulls Cove; two sisters, Helen Anderson of Bass Harbor and Hilda Schauss of Connecticut. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Walter Kelley; and a sister, Rose Marie Matthews. A memorial gathering for his family and friends will be held at one of John’s favorite places, the Seawall picnic area later this summer. The date and time will be announced.
