HARBORSIDE – John Joseph Howard Sr., 84, died of cancer Aug. 13, 2005, at a Blue Hill hospital. He was born Aug. 26, 1920, in Brookline, Mass., the son of Margaret M. and Tracy L. Howard Sr. John served in World War II in the Army Air Corps in the “China, Burma, and India Campaign.” He was a skilled carpenter who helped build many homes in the Cedarwood section of Waltham, Mass., after the war, and then worked for the City of Newton, Mass., for 30 years in the sanitation and carpentry departments. He retired to his beloved Harborside, in 1983, where his humor and helpfulness will be greatly missed. He is survived by his daughter, Gail J. Howard of Oceanside, Calif.; his sister, Mary Pratt of Vernon, Conn.; his sisters-in-law, Joan Howard of Middleboro, Mass., and Nancy Howard of Newton, Mass.; many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Donelda M. Howard; his son, John J. “Chip” Howard Jr.; his brothers, Tracy, Lloyd, and Donald; and his sisters, Emily Donnelly and Anna Lansed. Friends are invited to call 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Jordan-Fernald, 141 South St., Blue Hill, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Harborside.
