HARRINGTON – John Kennedy Jr., 90, passed away peacefully Nov. 4, 2006, at his home after a long illness. He was born Aug. 1, 1916, in Milbridge, the son of the late John Kennedy Sr. and Hattie (Strout) Kennedy. Johnny graduated from Harrington High School, Class of 1934. He pitched for his high school’s baseball team all through his years in high school. John served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Early employment included work on the Great Lakes as a coal passer and oiler, and in the shipyards in Portland; Saint Regis Paper Co. and owned and worked off of his own lobster boat. He was an avid baseball fan from professional baseball to little league. Johnny enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and square dancing. John was an avid outdoorsman and could usually be found outdoors either working or playing. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Virginia (Strout) Kennedy; five children, Glenda Grant of Harrington, Linda Farren and husband, Buddy, of Columbia, Bucky Kennedy and wife, Saundra, of Harrington, Jim Kennedy and wife, Roberta, of Harrington and Rebecca Davis and husband, Kirby, of Cherryfield; 13 grandchildren, Brian Grant and wife, April, Kevin Grant and partner, Melanie Stanwood, Cathy Grant, Mike Farren and wife, Cathy, Laurie Fraser and husband, David, all of Harrington, Angel Alley and husband, Robert of Addison, Bruce Farren and partner, Dawn Woodward, of Addison, Janet Farren-Tibbetts of Columbia Falls, Adam Kennedy and wife, Karen, of Harrington, Amy Kennedy of Cape Cod, Mass., Stephen Kennedy of Jones-port, Amanda Kennedy, and Andrew Kennedy, both of Harrington; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Dana Kennedy of Machias; and a sister, Barbara Spizio, of Harrington; four sisters-in-law, Ruby Howard, Doreen Strout, Carrie Strout and Jeanette Wright; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 6, at the Kennedy family cemetery, located behind the Kennedy home, officiated by the Rev. Martha Shaw. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Harrington Volunteer Fire Department, care of Chief Glendon Carter, R.R. 1, Box 59, Harrington, ME 04643. Friends and family are invited to gather with the family for a time of fellowship and refreshments after the service at Adam and Karen Kennedy’s home, located next to the cemetery.
