PALMYRA and NEWPORT John Kurro, 79, passed away Sunday even-ing, Feb. 24, 2008, at Seba-sticook Valley Hospital. John was born Dec. 13, 1928, in the Bronx, N.Y. Brought up in the Bronx, N.Y., John graduated from Amityville High School in 1946. After graduating, he and his close friend, “Gunner,” toured the U.S. on motorcycles. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1950. John was a member of the 492nd Bomb Squadron, 7th Bomb Wing and member of the Air Force Gunner’s Association. He served four years in the Air Force as an aerial gunner on the B-36 Peace Maker, and was stationed in England, Fort Worth, Texas, and Loring Air Force Base, Limestone. John was also a journeyman machinist. John met and married Joan Welsh, March 19, 1955, in Long Island, N.Y. They lived on Long Island, N.Y., until 1972 and moved to Palmyra, where John and Joan purchased and ran the famous Gateway Restaurant and Lounge, Newport. John and Joan retired from the restaurant business in 1991. John was a member of the American Legion, Bangor Elks Lodge No. 244, Meridian Splendor Masonic Lodge No. 49, the Anah Shrine, Bangor and Tri-County Shrine Club, where he was awarded the Noble of the Year Award in 1979. He was predeceased by his brother, Elmoth. He is survived by his wife, Joan; and three daughters, Lynda Woloss and her husband, Bob, of York Harbor, Kristine Kurro of Palmyra and Carolyn Kurro of Louisville, Ky.; three grandchildren, Dylan and Dana Andrews, and Otto Shorey; nephew, Alan Kurro and his wife, Robin, and their children, Hope Jacobson and her husband, Randy, and Eian and Liza Kurro; nieces, Dawn Bates and husband, Drew, of Long Island, N.Y., and Valerie Ferrara and husband, Nelson, of Long Island, N.Y. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main St., Newport, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, with Pastor Al H. Worden officiating.
