MILBRIDGE – John L. Stanley, 85, died peacefully July 19, 2004 at his home after a short illness. He was born April 12, 1919, in Steuben, the fifth child to John and Bernice (Stanwood) Stanley. John graduated from Steuben High School in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the South Pacific. John earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Maine at Orono in 1949 and his master’s degree in Psychology in 1950 from Trinity College in Connecticut. He was employed by the FBI from 1951 to 1976 retiring as a Special Agent. After he moved to Milbridge he was employed with the Union Trust Bank in Milbridge. John was a man of many interests, he was a member of the Board of the Milbridge Cemetery Association where he served as Treasurer, a member of the Milbridge Historical Society, sang in the choir at the Milbridge Congregational Church, and was active in the Men’s Wednesday Morning Breakfast Group. He loved his family and friends. John leaves behind his beloved wife of 57 years, Ruth “Tommy” (Thompson) Stanley; two brothers, Guy and his wife, Audrey, of Ludlow, Mass. and Frank and his wife, Marcella, of Springfield, Mass.; sister, Madeline Sawyer of Milbridge; many much-loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. A sister Beatrice Stanley predeceased him. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 2004 at the Milbridge Congregational Church with Rev. Joyce Ingrisano officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Milbridge. A memorial reception will be held in the Church basement following the services. There will be no visiting hours. Memorial contributions may be made in John’s memory to the Milbridge Congregational Church Roofing Fund; the Milbridge Fire Department or the Milbridge Historical Society.
