MIDLAND, Mich. – John Lawris Schurman, D.O., 57, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, at his home. The son of Walter and Frances (VanHorn) Schurman, he was born Sept. 21, 1950, in Bar Harbor, and his family moved to Palm Beach County, Fla., in 1964. He served our country in the U.S. Navy four years as a hospital corpsman during the Vietnam War. Dr. Schurman received his bachelor’s degree at Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Fla., in 1979; Doctor of Osteopathy Degree at University of Health Sciences, Kansas City, Mo., in 1984; and masters in public health in 1998. He practiced medicine in Evergreen, Ala., four years before coming to the Bay City/Saginaw, Mich., area. Dr. Schurman was board certified in occupational medicine and was the occupational health medical director at Bay Medical Center for eight years and Covenant HealthCare for 10 years. He was a member of the American Osteopathic Association, American Osteopathic College of Occupational and Preventive Medicine and the American Legion Post, Duluth, Ga. Dr. Schurman was also a pilot and aviation medical examiner, loved the ocean, Torch Lake, and enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling and life. Surviving family members include his wife of 17 years, Theresa (Steiner) Schurman; father and stepmother, Walter and Jean Schurman of Fort Pierce, Fla.; brothers, C. Parker Schurman of Los Angeles, Wilson and Becky Rice of Stuart, Fla., and Walter and Denice Rice of Bainbridge, Ga.; sisters, Amy Rice of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Lynn and Jeffrey Eggert of Cedar Lake, N.J.; four sons and one daughter, Ian Schurman of Jupiter, Fla., Graham Schurman and friend, Kristen, of Tallahassee, Fla., Ryan and Julie Beutel, Jared and Justin Beutel of Sanford, Mich., and his friend, Norma, and Jenica and Dylan Nordstrom of Kalamazoo, Mich.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Carol and Robert Fike, William and Nancy Steiner, Barb and Dave MacDonald, Susan and Ron Wilkie, and Patty and D.J. LeVasseur; special niece, Jill and Chris Blasy, and their son, Evan; along with many other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins that he loved. He was predeceased by his mother, Frances Schurman; and brother, Earl Rice. Cremation has taken place. A memorial celebration of his life will be Saturday, Jan. 12, at the family residence. Another memorial celebration will be held in Maine at a later date. Charitable contributions in his memory may be directed to the American Cancer Society – Renal Cell Cancer Research or charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of W.
